Seattle Mariners
take Division in American Style
by Tim Loughner
In what can only be described as a tear
jerking moment, the Seattle Mariners clinched the American
League West Title while setting several MLB records. The
moment of great jubilation came in the shadows of America’s
darkest hours as memories of the terrorist attacks at
the World Trade Center and Pentagon still sat heavy in
back of the minds of 45,000 fans at Safeco Field. The
Mariners, with all the class ever seen in baseball, celebrated
their victory not with their own glory, but with a tribute
to the fallen and to America.
The Mariners have seen the best season
ever in the ball club’s history, having a comfortable
20 game lead over division rivals, the Oakland Athletics
as well as leading MLB in wins/losses. However, they are
not letting it go to their heads, crediting much of their
success to consistent teamwork and devoted fans.
"The fans are such a big part of this
season," M’s second baseman Bret Boone said. "This city
is baseball crazy, in a good way."
Traditionally when teams reached a championship
victory, you would commonly see the team rush out to the
field shaking their fists. Along with that would be champagne
poured over each other, and maybe a fireworks show. All
in all, the team would be doing what any sports team would
do – gloating. Keep in mind, there is nothing wrong with
this, but recent events altered the mood.
The M’s displayed to the nation what a classy team they
are. Mark McLemore (pictured, right) entered the field
bearing an American flag with the rest of the team following
in line. The team then made their way to the pitchers
mound, got on their knees and prayed with the team chaplain.
After which the team ran out to the crowd, tears in their
eyes – including Lou Piniella who is known to be a bit
on the tough side – while the Lee Greenwood hit “Proud
to be an American” played over the stadium speakers.
This demonstration of patriotism shows
how deeply the events of September 11 affected not only
the general public, but also athletes and celebrities.
They showed to their fans what real winners they are and
should be commended.
My hat’s off to the M’s. ***
