Columnist Mike Madias All Americans - political columnists included, have the right to free speech.

The American Partisan published a column by Dave Gibson entitled "What Happens When Whites Are No Longer The Majority?"

Mr. Gibson states that "this country as we know it will cease to exist. Crime and drug use will cripple this nation. We will have absolutely no tax base on which to depend. Every item sold in this country will be imported from Europe and Asia."

Gibson's has gotten on the public soapbox and stated his opinions - a treasured American activity. Now, in equally fine American tradition, he must endure the slings and arrows of rebuttal. Here it comes.

Gibson's conclusions are neither supported by statistical nor historical anecdotal evidence.

He says the population of the United States is becoming more diverse; and so crime and drug use will cripple the nation.

He blames the Clinton Administration for the influx of Hispanics onto our population.

His assertions ignore the statistics published by the Department of Justice.

Homicide rates in the United States have been declining sharply since 1991 and are now at 30 year lows.

Overall, violent crimes have been declining for the last nine years. Statistics show that the latest figures on violent crime are the lowest that the Department of Justice has ever reported.

The same authoritative source reports that the rate of property crimes has been constantly declining for the last 20 years.

There is no statistical evidence to support the notion that the change in demographic makeup of America has resulted in an increase in violent or property crime.

Drug addiction (a medical problem) does cripple the republic. But Gibson is incorrect in stating that black and Hispanic Americans are the major drug users of illegal drugs The Department of Justice cites a survey conducted by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration showing that marijuana and cocaine use is most prevalent among persons aged 18 to 25. Marijuana and cocaine use drops off significantly when considering Americans who are 26 years of age or older. The drug problem is concentrated in young populations and seems to pass on with other youthful follies when our kids grow up. Over the last eight years, marijuana use rates for young people have been slightly on the rise. Cocaine use for the same group is level.

Gibson offers anecdotal evidence saying that when whites cease to be a majority, then bad government, chaos, violence and murder of white people is the result.

He cites violence in the southern parts of Africa. He is correct in saying that there is wholesale appropriation of the lands of white farmers and there is terror afoot; and murder, especially in Zimbabwe.

But the worst, most corrupt, and murderous regimes in modern history, the French Reign of Terror, and the Third Reich were both the result of the wealthy elite, who aroused the common people into supporting state sponsored mass murder.

The horror of violent social disintegration is not related to ethnic diversity.

The murderous Cultural Revolution in China was not due to an influx of black and Hispanic immigrants. Nor was the fragmentation and ethnic cleansing in the old state of Yugoslavia.

Gibson states that the tax base of the country will evaporate. In the major cities, the tax base has eroded, but it is more than offset by growth in the tax bases of major metropolitan areas, including the core city and its surrounding communities.

He says that the US balance of trade is affected by immigration and the growth of non white populations. He offers no evidence to support this idea.

Mr. Gibson's argument is the kind of thoughtless rhetoric that comes from white supremacist groups, like the Aryan Nation. ***
