CROSSING
THE LINE

You
just knew it was going to happen - it just had to, and sure enough it did. And
now that the sniper has gunned down FBI analyst Linda Franklin (right), not
only are the gloves off, all bets are off as well as agents from the FBI and
just about every police agency around the country come into the Washington area
and in the words of my column
from Monday, "hunt this bastard down and kill him with absolute prejudice."
For the first time, FOX News has mentioned that this sniper may be of Middle Eastern descent, which in my column from last Thursday had previously been alluded to. Al-Qaeda had already previously stated that they were willing to take this war of theirs to the streets of America if they had to and if necessary, kill us one at a time if that is what it took to bring our nation to its knees - and from the looks of it, they seem to be doing a fairly good job of it, given the namby-pamby wimpy nature of all too many of our citizenry. For far too long, all too many of our people have forgotten the rich history and traditions of our forebears who have given all that they have - to include their lives as necessary, in order to protect, preserve and defend our way of life.
I still remember the oath I took when I served my country. I was in full uniform when I was sworn in that day and even now, I remember the chills of pride and accomplishment I felt as I recited those words spoken that beautiful winter morning:
"I, Timothy Rollins, do solemnly swear, that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States of America against all enemies foreign and domestic; that I will bear true allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; that I will well and faithfully discharge the duties of the office on which I am about to enter, so help me God."
When I took that oath, I knew that I might well have had to lay down my life for my country and its way of life if necessary. I also knew that I might have had to kill others in order to achieve the same. In the past, I have called for the return of a peacetime draft. I still hold that position - perhaps even more so in light of the events of and subsequent to 9-11. Every able-bodied male should give back a portion of his life in military service. For legitimate conscientious objectors, there are other avenues of government service. Actor Richard Dreyfuss reportedly worked in a VA hospital for a time as a means of meeting his service requirement. If it worked for him and he successfully met his responsibility, it can and should work for everyone, to include those not suitable for military duty.
With the shooter having taken out an FBI analyst who handled terrorist matters, and more than likely not having known this, it is this poor schmuck's misfortune for having done so. Hunting season just opened and as I see it, there's no bag limit. This animal and others like him need to get the message whether the phone rings or not. While nobody advocates the abrogation of due process, if this guy gets 468 bullets pumped into his carcass, one cannot imagine anyone losing any sleep over it - to include card-carrying members of the ACLU, among others.
President
Bush (right) said in his televised address last Monday night that we refuse
to live in fear. The fact is much of Washington is terrified because DC and
Maryland have gun laws that are loony-toons. Virginia is better, but not much.
The Second Amendment guarantees us the right to keep and bear arms and was placed
second in the Bill of Rights after freedom of religion, the press and right
to peaceably assemble for a redress of grievances. This was done for a reason,
and it is time America wakes up and pulled its collective head out of the sand
and/or its butt in order to salvage what portion of its rights and freedoms
remain, lest we wake up and - against our will - find ourselves facing Mecca
five times a day for prayer with all of our rights and freedoms gone - forever.
For once they're gone, we will never get them back. ***
