THE
GLOVES ARE OFF

With
his once powerful authority as the spiritual leader of more than a million Catholics
in the Boston archdiocese having long since dissipated - especially in light
of the latest revelations that have come to light, Bernard Cardinal Law (shown,
right) is now hiding in the Vatican while his fate is being decided. Whether
or not he returns is anybody's guess, but wise folks wouldn't bet on it - in
any amount.
Things in Boston have become so bad that 58 priests have requested his resignation as Archbishop of Boston. In the letter - a copy of which is available here, while the past accomplishments of Law were lauded, the recent events of the last few months and more particularly the past few days were of such magnitude that they closed ranks and called en masse for Law to go, regardless of cost or loss. Another 12 priests are expected to add their signatures to the letter today.
The recent release of additional church personnel files on the rogue priests indicate that not only was there a prevailing subculture of homosexuality, adultery and pedophilia within the Roman Catholic priesthood in the Boston archdiocese, and that Law was not only aware of it, but that he actively sought to conceal their behavior to the extent of moving priests around in an effort to keep the lid on it.
Now that the full impact of the scandal has become public nationwide and especially so in Boston where the largest cluster seems to be centered, we find the faith of millions of American Catholics shattered permanently by the actions of rogues who were more interested in serving themselves than those to whom their lives were supposed to be dedicated to serving. Instead of feeling safe from the world by attending Mass, American Catholics were finding wolves within the confines of their parishes in the form of their own priests. Rather than turn these animals over to the police for prosecution by the district attorney's office and eventual incarceration - where they belong, this behavior went unreported for generations until some courageous children and their parents dropped the dime on these scum and took matters into their own hands.
The damage has been so pervasive over this matter that the Church Finance Committee in Boston has given Cardinal Law the go-ahead to file for bankruptcy protection to stave off paying the anticipated lawsuits as well as seal up the records of actions committed by other rogue priests. Not only would such action require Vatican approval before going ahead, it would require judicial approval in Boston, which would be highly unlikely given the public sentiment in the area.
To make matters worse in the Boston area, retired priest Paul Shanley, who was extradited under heavy guard in June from California on charges of child rape and indecent assault on young boys, was freed on $300,000 cash bail after an unidentified group of friends and other supporters ponied up the money to spring him loose.
Although he was required to surrender his passport, remain in Massachusetts and refrain from contacting victims or witnesses in the case as part of his bail conditions, it is nonetheless shocking that Shanley was allowed out of jail at all - not only from a standpoint of the crimes he is charged with, but also the fact that concerns have been raised about his physical safety and that he be alive for trial. What makes this all the more disturbing in regards to Shanley is that he is one of the founding members of NAMBLA - the North American Man Boy Love Association, a group of perverts that believe in "Sex before eight or it's too late" as a motto, and whose lives revolve around pedophilia and other acts of depravity. As has been said before and again in this column, to engage in such an act against a child and rob them of their innocence - thus shattering their lives permanently, is an act that merits one punishment and one punishment only: EXECUTION.
Call me harsh if you want, I really don't care, but the fact is that in over 25 years as a legal professional, I have yet to see a pedophile change their stripes. It just doesn't happen - they are incurable, rabid cur dogs and need to be put out of their misery by way of execution as they have shown by their criminal act they are unfit to remain in society or to be caged at taxpayer expense enjoying benefits that rival IBM and Microsoft - benefits that we the taxpayers get stuck with the tab for.
Unfortunately folks, it is not known when this sad saga will end. The inroads made by homosexuals and pedophiles into the priesthood of the Roman Catholic Church have been so deep and pervasive, the corruption so systemic, endemic and epidemic, that it will take a generation or more - probably two, for this institution to rid itself of the plague that has infested it so deeply and thoroughly.
Perhaps by allowing priests to marry, the Church can better place itself in a position to attract stabler and more qualified men into the ranks of its priesthood - one whose proclivities make them less likely to engage in the criminal conduct that have it ducking for cover now - both in criminal court and bankruptcy court, such as they are looking at doing in Boston.
For unless longer term and more substantive means are found to bring these rogue priests to heel, the results on American Catholics and especially their children can only leave a legacy of heartache and pain the likes of which will never fully be healed.
And those said same priests will continue to ply their sick criminal habits on unwitting and unsuspecting victims unless they are brought in check immediately.

EDITOR'S UPDATE: Cardinal Bernard Law is scheduled to meet with Pope John Paul II Friday, at which time he is scheduled to offer his resignation, according to FOX News. Keep in mind that Law offered to resign in April, only to have the Pope reject said resignation. It should also be noted that the pope must accept his resignation in order for it to take effect.
