Ten Commandments: To Be Or Not To Be
by April Shenandoah, Columnist

December 6, 2002

Columnist April Shenandoah We who stand for "religious freedom" can take a lesson from Alabama Supreme Court Justice, Roy Moore. He is standing for his faith and setting an example for us to follow - and follow we must. He believes that "God put me here for a purpose and that one purpose is to acknowledge His law and sovereignty." The controversial plaque of the Ten Commandments still remain on the wall of his courtroom after the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) tried to force its removal in 1995. Last summer he boldly had a four-foot-tall, 5,300-pound granite block inscribed with the Ten Commandments erected in the rotunda of the state judicial building. However, recently the federal district court said the monument was a violation of the First Amendment clause barring government endorsements of religion. But wait, something is wrong with this picture! Why are the Ten Commandments allowed to hang above the head of the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court in Washington, DC, but against the law to be displayed in the Alabama Supreme Court? Moore has been given 30 days to remove it.

The courts are ruling against the Creator of the universe. William Penn warned us, "If we will not be governed by God, then we will be ruled by tyrants." And George Washington proclaimed, "It is impossible to govern the world without God and the Bible. It boggles my mind when I hear someone say that this has never been a Christian nation. All of history refers to our Christian heritage. Of course, that part of history has been removed from our classrooms and textbooks; therefore, many children and young adults do not have a clue how America was founded. They spout the propaganda that has been taught to them and accept it as fact. I've said it before and I'm going to keep saying it, "Separation of Church and State is the biggest lie of the century." The U.S. Constitution does not use the phrase "wall of separation" anywhere!

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press, or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

- United States Constitution, First Amendment

In 1620, the Pilgrims established a government based on the Bible with the signing of the Mayflower Compact, which begins "In the Name of God." Our national motto is "In God we trust." The Bible through more than 150 years of early settlement in America remained the base of her people's religious devotion, her education, and her government. The Bible was the first textbook in out schools and it set the standard for all our laws.

The inaugural addresses of all our presidents and the Constitution of all fifty of our states, without exception, references Almighty God of the universe, the Author and Sustainer of liberty. The Congress starts each day's session with a prayer by the chaplain. A small room in the Capitol with a stained glass window showing George Washington kneeling in prayer, has been designated for members of Congress for prayer. The Washington Memorial, Lincoln Memorial, Jefferson Memorial and The Library of Congress all bare the name of God, the Bible and/or scripture. Yet today the "powers that be" are hoodwinking the American people into believing that God has no place in the public arena.

We have allowed the Communist founded ACLU to undermine everything sacred in our country. And what's worse, our government officials have gone right along with their agenda. They could have put a stop to it at their conception in 1920. The ACLU's end goal is the removal of any and all expressions of religious faith in public life. Our churches and homes will be next! They are already sending monitors into church meetings to make sure that sermons are "politically correct." Not long ago a pastor was arrested for speaking against homosexuality from the pulpit. Yet, ironically, they never say a word when Witchcraft, the Satanic Bible or Islam is present in the classroom or elsewhere. Could it be that it is only the God of the Bible that they object to?

The entire world is in chaos and we as a nation have the unmitigated gall to eliminate the Ten Commandments from public view? Join me in sending Roy Moore, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Alabama, a Christmas card of thanks and encouragement for the bold stand he has taken for his unwavering faith.
