Give Her A Medal

Some of you will remember a 1988 incident that happened in Carrollton, Kentucky,
where a drunk driver collided with a church bus and killed 24 children, returning
from Kings Island. Right after my wife’s grandfather learned of it, he said
that before the whole thing was over, they would give the drunk driver a medal
for showing America how "dangerous" those church buses were.
As was often the case, the words of this wise, old World War II veteran were nearly prophetic. Because in the months following the incident, the federal government indeed instituted new, tougher regulations on church buses.
Another mass murder by another drunk driver was quickly overshadowed by the numerous stories of supposedly unsafe church buses. The facts of the incident became almost insignificant. Two dozen vibrant, young people met their grisly fates in a blazing inferno caused, NOT by the actions of a single drunk driver, but rather by the unsafe conditions of one church’s bus.
My
wife’s grandfather passed away several years ago, but I can only imagine what
he might have said about the murdering Houston mother, Andrea Yates (pictured,
right).
When I close my eyes, I can see him now saying, "Before this whole thing is over, they’ll give her a medal."
Since the series of ghastly killings, I have heard and read a myriad of explanations for Andrea’s crimes against humanity. She had too many children. Her actions were caused by post-partum depression. The husband was unsympathetic to her condition. Andrea was overstressed from home schooling her children.
Before her trial is over, we may have to give the woman a medal for showing America the problems with the traditional family.
In his appearance on CBS’s 60 Minutes, Russell Yates, husband of the butcher, recently said, "The medical community failed us."
So, now it’s the fault of the medical community too! It is everybody’s fault except evil little Andrea, the diseased animal who viciously held each of them under the water in her bathtub.
I know! I know! My detractors will remind me that I am a man. I have never been pregnant. I have never suffered from post-partum depression. However, I do not have to slaughter my children to know that it is something that a father or a mother shouldn’t do.
No doubt my wife’s grandfather would be right on point about this one too. If you can make excuses for the woman’s behavior, then you also have to believe that Andrea Yates did all of us a big favor by killing those 5 innocent children. We should give her a medal. She is not a bad woman. She is not evil. It was the husband’s fault. Her medications didn’t work. It is the home that is bad. It is the world that failed. It is the medical community that let her down.
Andrea Yates should be cleared of all charges. She ought to be set free. Andrea should immediately be returned to society. After all, the poor woman "lost" her kids. Let her procreate some more. Don’t worry if she kills the next one; poor little misunderstood Andrea can have more.
The home, the medical community, indeed all of society should be charged with murder in the first degree! We cannot hold a single individual responsible for her crimes.
It took a drunk driver to expose the "unsafe" condition of church activity busses. It took Andrea Yates to expose the problems with the home, the medical community, and the whole of society. My wife’s grandfather had the right idea: Let’s give her a medal! ***
