(Bush is a Liar, Arnold’s a Nazi and Rush is on Drugs)

"The Heretical Housewife"

Managing Editor Jennifer KingTaking into account the events of the past few weeks, it appears that we are in the midst of a three-pronged “October Surprise”, courtesy of our friends on the Left. The first troika goes thusly: Bush lied in order to precipitate a war, there are no weapons of mass destruction and our situation in Iraq is intolerable and worsening. All of which is demonstrably false, but the constant drumbeat, accompanied by the media Chorus, accomplishes the desired affect of dampening the President’s poll numbers and creating doubt in the public mind. Predictably, it also dampens the morale of our troops, but what are a few eggs?

The second part of the Surprise was the tiresome and wholly expected last minute character assassination unleashed upon Arnold Schwarzenegger. Gray Davis, never known for playing nice, scraped the bottom of the barrel when he came up with unsubstantiated claims of sexual harassment against Arnold. Most of the allegations were 20-30 years old, and most of the accusers were anonymous. Terry McAuliffe and Bob Mulholland must not have realized what happened when the Democratic Party sold its soul to save Bill Clinton. Democrats, NOW, Senators Finestein and Boxer et.al, simply have no credibility left. The voters may be hayseed hacks to the Washington elites, but they had enough sophistication to see through that ruse. The Los Angeles Times too, is forever tainted by its biased coverage and desperate, last-minute editorializing. “Der Gropenfuhrer”, as the Times sneeringly refers to the Governor-elect, will no doubt remember this in the days to come.

And, heartbreakingly, Rush IS on drugs - as he admitted to his stunned audience on October 10th. Like many others, I dismissed the initial charges - made by a disgruntled former employee whose husband has a criminal record. And I believe that we will discover many interesting inaccuracies in the reporting. However, more intriguing is the timing of this tale. The Enquirer supposedly held this story for two years. Why pop it out now? Was it due to the ESPN dustup, as others allege? Or, more sinisterly, as a coordinated effort in order to silence Rush’s voice as the 2004 election cycle gets going? David Kendall, the lawyer for the Enquirer, was Bill Clinton’s lawyer during his impeachment. These type of tactics have been famously used by the Clinton good squad for years. Was it mere chance that the Los Angeles Times printed a story on prescription drug use and related hearing loss on the same day that the Rush barrage hit the press?

Rush’s admission, made without complaint or excuse, was made forthrightly. Predictably, however, his enemies seized upon it in order to crow. Rush is a “hypocrite” they charged, although they had to go back to 1995 to find any commentary he had made on drug abuse. Furthermore, there is a distinction between becoming addicted to legally prescription pain pills and illegally procuring street drugs for recreational use. I expect that Rush will comply with any investigation, and I expect that he will live with the consequences of his actions.

But back to the goons. As seen during the California recall, the Left has become increasingly unhinged. Teddy Kennedy’s delusional ranting on the Senate floor alleging that the war in Iraq was “cooked up in Texas” and is a “fraud”, not to mention his recent accusations which allege that the President told, “lie after lie after lie after lie” show that rational discourse between dissenting Americans is dead - at least on that side of the aisle. Kennedy, in effect, has accused the President of treason, without producing the evidence to support these outrageous claims. Kennedy alleges that the President, “told us there was an imminent threat” when the President decisively did not. Kennedy also alleged that “we were told there were nuclear weapons”. Scouring the President’s speeches shows nothing of the kind. Kennedy is obviously used to getting away with this type of behavior. When called on it by Sean Hannity, Kennedy snarled that he “wouldn’t be interrupted” (code: by a puny talk show host) and hung up.

The Jihad continues, as the latest AP headline shows. “Documents show Bush and Hitler Link”, it screams. Reading the article, one is unimpressed. It consists of a weak link between Prescott Bush, W’s grandfather, and a banking partner, Fritz Thyssen - an early Nazi supporter who abandoned the Nazi party in 1938 over its treatment of Catholics and Jews. Prescott Bush owned exactly one share in this enterprise. However, the headline, meant to smear the Bushes in the public mind, does the task. Expect it to continue. ***
