In Memory of the Fallen (9-11-2001)Forget It, President Bush, You'll Never Win

"Candidly Yours"

Linda A. Prussen-Razzano If we listen to the war weenies, Mr. President, you have already lost. Lost the battle before the first American boot touched Iraqi soil.

They say you are waging an illegal campaign. They cite all sorts of references, but never the ones that actually did authorize you to go to war. They conveniently ignore United Nations Resolution 1154, adopted March 2, 1998, that warned of the "severest consequences" for Iraq’s failure to comply with nearly a dozen previous resolutions. What did the war weenies think we would use against Iraq, harsh language? They ignore the fact that President Clinton cited 1154, and Public Law 105-235, as his authority for bombing Iraq in 1998. They also ignore House Joint Resolution 114 (Public Law 107-243), passed on October 11, 2002, which authorizes use of force against Iraq, the attacks on our planes in the no-fly zones, each of which is impetus for a military response, and the significant number of times Iraq made claims that turned out to be a pack of lies.

I know, I know, don’t confuse them with facts.

The war weenies say you are endangering American lives by enflaming anti-American sentiment abroad. Given that your biggest foreign policy decisions prior to September 11, 2001, were: the rejection of the Kyoto Treaty (which would punish industrialized countries like America), refusing to participate in the Small Arms Ban (which would violate our Constitution), refusing to attend the Race Conference (which turned out to be little more than a Jew-bashing festival), and rescinding President Clinton’s signature on the International Criminal Court Treaty (which was never ratified by Congress, would have been punitive to our troops in any military engagement, and gave undue power to unelected despots and dictators from around the globe), you must have really irritated the tree-hugging, gun-hating, peace loving facet of the Muslim world. You know who they are; they are the same ones who used chemical weapons on their own people, intentionally polluted the environment by dumping millions of barrels of oil into the ocean and setting other oil wells on fire, shoot dissenters, torture civilians at large, rape defenseless kids, and proclaim death to America.

We have to protect them, President Bush. The Human Shields insist on it.

The war weenies say you aren’t really interested in liberating Iraq. They cry about humanitarian aid not getting through mined ports, water pipelines that Saddam’s henchmen destroyed, a few civilian casualties out of thousands of bombs dropped, and, gasp! that you didn’t win the war before the weekend so viewers would not be distracted from the Oscars. Now you did it, Hollywood hates you. Oh, wait, Hollywood already hates you.

Never mind.

The war weenies say this engagement is not going well because we have bombed for several days and Saddam is still alive. Come on, President Bush, the Almighty Father, Creator of Heavens and Earth, put it all together in less than a week and had a day left over to rest. They are pissed that you didn’t level the countryside, that you are taking extreme measures to protect the population, that our magnificent men and women in uniform aren’t running around killing everything that moves. If they did, it would have been over; but since they’re not, it isn’t. You’re going to get blamed no matter what happens.

They will blame you for Saddam having his troops dress like civilians to launch terrorist attacks under the guise of surrender, for Saddam placing his military amongst civilians to increase the death count when we bomb him, for Saddam having our troops paraded across the television, for Saddam’s refusal to leave the country when given ample opportunity, for Saddam starving his people by the tens of thousands and building multiple palaces to himself.

Yup, it’s all your fault, don’t you see? You didn’t bow and scrape and beg and whine enough to the fools at the United Nations. You didn’t crawl and kow-tow to terrorists. You didn’t wither up in fear at the thought of low poll numbers and harsh press reports.

And when we do find weapons of mass destruction, as we did in 1991, 1992, 1994, 1995, and 1998, after repeated assurances by Iraq that they didn’t have any, you’ll get blamed for that, too. We planted them, sure enough. At least that’s what the war weenies are claiming.

So forget it, President Bush. With logic and reasoning like this, you’ll never win. ***
