"Eye on Conservatism"

Columnist Robert YohoUnited Nations LogoListening only to the Democrat candidates running for president, you would come to the conclusion that we are losing the war on terror, we had been soundly defeated in Iraq, and that we needed to summon reinforcements from the United Nations (logo, right).

If you define victory by the terms that Democrats are currently using, then it would be impossible for America to ever rid the world of another Hitler. We wouldn’t have the moral fortitude to bear the massive loss of life or the patience to endure the long, bitter, and costly campaign on many fronts. Come to think of it, by employing those same terms, we couldn’t possibly have been victorious in World War II.

America officially entered the war following the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 and didn’t declare victory until August of 1945.

In the Pacific, American servicemen took control of those islands and declared victory. However, "victory" did not necessarily mean the immediate cessation of American casualties. The troops were later called upon to conduct "mopping up" campaigns, in which they tried to flush out the remaining Japanese troops who were still entrenched in their island caves and mountaintops. Many brave American servicemen gave their lives in the pursuit of this objective. Just as many good Marines died after the flag was raised on Mt. Suribachi, so have numerous servicemen died since President Bush declared victory from the carrier, USS Abraham Lincoln.

Did that mean we had not won these battles? Of course not!

Although these deaths are indeed tragic, they are not militarily significant. There is not a one of us who would think that the life of a single serviceman has no value. However, the number of military casualties since 9/11 is certainly minute compared to the predictions made by those who opposed any military action in Afghanistan and/or Iraq.

Had they been alive then, these liberals would have been forced to criticize their fellow Democrats, FDR and Harry Truman, for the deaths of American troops after major victories had been declared.

It must be boldly stated to the media skeptics bogged down in their use of the word "quagmire" that there is absolutely no correlation between our battle in Iraq and what happened in Vietnam. Although it can be argued that our efforts did indeed slow the spread of Communism worldwide—over 50,000 American lives were still lost in Vietnam and we did not emerge victorious! Our leaders in Washington were not committed to victory so we eventually were forced to climb in our helicopters and flee in shame.

Yet this Commander-in-Chief would accept no substitute for victory. And nobody is fleeing in Iraq except Saddam Hussein and those most loyal to him!

So the war is going to cost us big! Big deal! Perhaps the question we should be asking is: "What would it have cost us to do nothing?" What did our years of indecision, apathy, or lack of terrorism preparedness cost our country in lives and treasure since those 19 terrorists boarded those four airliners?

In case you were sleeping in history class, the Marshal Plan that rebuilt Europe was not done on the cheap. And the next half-century without Hitler was not without some growing pains.

We ARE winning the peace in Iraq! America wins the peace every day that the UN has no say in that country’s future.

Staining those Iraqi sands was the blood of brave Americans--not the urine from the French, who immediately wet their pants whenever faced with a conflict. And no one was ever quoted as saying: "To the Vichy go the spoils."

Under the guise of providing "humanitarian relief," the hostile non-combatants of the UN will move in to further prey on the Iraqi people. Their involvement would only serve to promote the next monster—a monster that America will eventually have to slay in another war. America must be patient and stay the course!

War is not a Hollywood script that can be wrapped up in one hour between commercials. It is not an episode of the A-Team, where nobody is killed by automatic weapon fire. Moreover, democracy cannot be purchased Wal-Mart cheap or prepared in thirty seconds out of the microwave. And if those are your standards of victory, perhaps America has never won a war.

It is obvious that the gutless French have not learned the lesson of the past 60 years: a rabid dog will not keep from biting you simply because you close your eyes.

Unfortunately, that lesson is also lost on many English-speaking Democrats. ***
