Bush: The Right Man for the Right Time

"Eye on Conservatism"

Columnist Robert YohoPresident George W. Bush (R-TX) at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio (AP) John Kerry routinely criticizes President Bush (right) for our policy in Iraq; yet he never gives us any specifics about what he would do differently. He attacks the president for the deaths of American servicemen and for failing to capture Usama Bin Laden. Meanwhile, he says nothing about the obvious successes in Iraq and the capture of Saddam Hussein and the deaths of his two barbarous sons, Uday and Qusay.

The last thing Kerry wants is for the president to highlight his leadership in the war against terror, because he knows it acknowledges Bush's military successes and places our actions in Iraq in their proper context. The man from Midland is the right man for the right time.

Now while the death of even one soldier is certainly not insignificant, the deaths of approximately 1100 have done absolutely nothing to undermine the good that has been done for our country. The simple fact remains: we are safer today because of President Bush's actions! That is not to say that another terrorist act cannot happen here. It could. However, the likelihood of another major terrorist act is greatly diminished because the terrorists ultimately know that their actions will not go unpunished.

I certainly do not question whether there were weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. The only questions I have involve what happened to them and where they might be now. Trust me; we will discover those answers in time. But even if those answers never come, we are all better off for Saddam Hussein having been removed from power in Iraq.

Even if Saddam never posed a direct threat, his overthrow makes it much less likely that those missing Wads will eventually form the arsenals on democracy. The enemies of freedom have seen that our Commander-in-Chief - unlike the previous administration - is not limited to excessive rhetoric followed by underwhelming force.

The president has every right - moreover, a responsibility - to highlight the role he played in leading the United States after the attacks of 9/11. Since that day, his actions have been responsible for protecting our nation and punishing those who planned these terrorist acts.

Bush not only hit them militarily; he hit them in the pocketbooks. Bush declared war on the financing of these operations. Through his bold insight and leadership, our country is much safer now. That is because President Bush doesn't just talk tough about punishing those who would harm us; he also backed those words up with actions! America's enemies no longer question our president's resolve.

Whether or not you agree with the administration's reasons for entering the war, you cannot rationally argue that the outcome of this war will have no impact on the future safety and security of Americans at home and abroad. The sword has been drawn. We must not return it to the sheath until our enemies have been decimated.

The safety of our young men and women in the armed forces would be put at risk if we pull out of Iraq with anything less than total victory. Our experience in Somalia sent a very clear message to Islamic extremists that if they killed enough Americans soldiers, then we would flee their country. That lesson led to the deaths of untold American soldiers and embassy personnel. Yet that lesson cannot and must not be repeated in Iraq!

No matter what the cost in troops and treasure, we must bring stability to the nation of Iraq! Although it hasn't been conclusively proven that there is any direct connection between Usama and Saddam, our actions in Iraq are directly tied to our war on terrorism.

Liberal Democrats in Washington constantly ask: "What will it cost?" Perhaps the question we should be asking is: "What would it have cost us to do nothing?" What did our years of indecision, apathy, or lack of terrorism preparedness cost our country in lives and treasure since those 19 terrorists boarded those four airliners?

Isn't it better that we are fighting them there? Every one of those animals that we kill in Baghdad, Fallujah, and Najaf is one less who will attack innocent civilians in New York City. Let them go after our warriors - not our children. Our young men and women in the military have boldly chosen to place themselves between America and those who have dedicated themselves to killing us. And under the president's leadership, they are ideally trained and equipped to deal with those threats.

But the fact remains: the United States is in a fight for our own survival and on the front lines of freedom. If the subject turns to French wine testing, then - by all means - vote for John Kerry. But if your nation is at war, and you need somebody strong enough to take out the trash, then President Bush is your guy! ***
