The First Amendment is a wonderful thing that all too often gets twisted, tortured and otherwise misused by extremists on both ends of the political spectrum.
Nobody
embodies First Amendment abuse more than 'Reverend' Fred Phelps (right) of Topeka's
Westboro Baptist Church (WBC). Long ago distanced from Southern Baptists because
of Phelps' tunnel vision and flagrant obsession with homosexuality to the exclusion
of all other biblical teachings, including but not limited to Jesus Christ's
atonement for sin and its attendant teachings of repentance, forgiveness and
redemption, Phelps and his 'so-called church' is nothing more than immediate
and extended family members and assorted whack jobs, hence, their being 'The
Church of the Inbred Jeds.'
With Phelps' singular obsession with homosexuality, one has to keep in mind the principle best verbalized by columnist Eric Margolis who stated, "Seeing loud-mouthed preachers of morality getting caught with their pants down is one of life's sweeter moments." Look no further than ministers the likes of Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart and their problems with homosexuals and prostitutes, respectively, and you'll see exactly what I mean. Phelps need to remember that disbarred lawyers who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
With WBC protesting military funerals, along with their 'God Hates Whomever' rants available on the web, one also can hear on audio, Phelps' celebration of the Columbia space shuttle disaster. In addition to this verbal vomit, we also know of WBC's recent celebrations of the West Virginia coal miner deaths, "thanking God for Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs)" in Iraq, and anything else that causes American deaths.
With such venom spewing from Phelps' mouth, one is left to wonder if the reason he's now 'preaching' full-time was because in 1969, the Kansas State Board of Law Examiners suspended his law license for seven counts of professional misconduct.
In that hearing, Kansas Attorney General Kent Frizzell described Phelps this way: "Phelps' conduct 'is one of total disregard for the duties and the respect and consideration owed by an attorney to his clients. Where money is concerned, the accused simply lacks any sense of balance and proportion. Whatever the reason for this, it appears to me a permanent condition.' Phelps is suspended for two years from practicing law."
In a nutshell, Phelps has sticky fingers and cares not for his clients as much as for himself. In 1979, he was disbarred from the practice of law by the Kansas Supreme Court who declared in part, that he had "little regard for the ethics of his profession."
Never one to quit, Phelps and his band of flunkies take their legal shenanigans to the federal level, and on 16 December 1985, nine Federal Court judges file a disciplinary complaint against Phelps and six of his attorney relatives, claiming that Phelps and his brood had made false accusations against them. In the end, Phelps surrenders his license to practice law in federal court in 1989. Out of the law business not only because of his disbarment, but also because daughter Katherine has had her law license suspended at least once, they take to spreading this 'religion of hatred'- much like a societal contagion - containing their unique brand of vitriol.
Financed by settlements received through manipulating the legal system to their advantage and inflicting their twisted, warped ideologies on us, they 'support', or rather, 'pimp themselves' by provoking physical confrontations with bystanders, other local residents and governmental agencies in order to go after their assets as a means of funding their right to clean, gut and otherwise desecrate the First Amendment.
It's ironic the very people whose funerals they protest are the ones who - if alive - would be the first to defend their right to spew their regurgitated verbal puke. Could you imagine these losers taking their show on the road to some hellhole like North Korea and the likes of Kim Jong 'Mentally' Il? Think they'd last long? I think not. When Canadian Immigration arrested Phelps and crew on arrival at Ottawa International Airport, they showed a rare display of intelligence.
The best thing responsible Americans can do is to ignore ego strokers the likes of Phelps and his ilk and their lust for 15 minutes of fame. Ignored long enough, they will eventually crawl under the rock from whence they came, or they could end up as the human waste they are, and end up getting flushed down the toilet, where they and their ideas rightly belong.
I don't know about you, but shutting this loser up cannot happen soon enough!
