People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals need to take a hard look at the "Cruel Military" and say "THANK YOU". This predominantly "left leaning" group (at least from what I have seen) should be running to every serviceman they can find and thank them for their assistance in helping animals. I have been in TWO Wars, THREE Combat Tours, and quite a few other visits to third world countries where the treatment of animals is very poor; except where you find American servicemen. American servicemen will always find a stray dog, cat, pig, monkey, big honking lizard or any other walking, crawling, flying or slithering thing they can get their hands on and turn it into a mascot, thus giving the animal the best life it could possibly have.
The most current example is this. We have a lot of Domestic Wild Packs (domestic dogs returned to pack roots running wild) which are constantly cranking out puppies. I recently heard and verified that the guys at the gate of a FOB (Forward Operating Base) near Kabul adopted two of them and have raised the pups and protected them from the larger members of the roving wild packs, as well as feed and keep them warm during the cold rain and snow filled nights. Recently a French vehicle struck one of the pups and cut a tendon. No less than four U.S. medics have assisted this pup and put her back together. This is an animal that would have been put down or left to die its natural death. American Servicemen with big hearts refused to accept that as an answer and are nurturing her back to health with good care and good food.
This is even more impressive when you realize the Military has a standing policy against mascots in Iraq and Afghanistan and the adopting of animals. The best SECOND HAND STORY that I have no proof of is the former Marine, now Army National Guard Soldier who adopted a pup and had it declared an Australian working dog in order to get it back to America. Hey, foreign governments can call a dog anything they want. No laws broken there. Think of it, a puppy destined to be abused and live a hard life is now in America eating canned dog food and drinking clean water. I of course have NO PROOF that this Marine turned National Guard Soldier did this and that the dog is now living happily with two other dogs rescued from being euthanized.
The irony of it all is that there is a company in the Kabul area (so I am told) that will take care of getting your animal vaccinated and the papers filled out and your pet sent home to America. Think if the military encouraged it: Service members would be sending their pups and kittens home to live a good life in the states. It would be a great new export for these countries as they really do have some good looking hardy, nice dogs running around our NATO bases. The pups are lively and strong. So until the military changes its policy we the "Service Members Who Just Like Animals" (S.M.W.J.L.A.) will keep adopting mascots at our front gates and treating wounded animals when we can. Where America goes, so goes Christian Compassion. God bless the American Military and the Christian nation it represents. Well...got to go feed the Dog. ***
UPDATE: As of this writing I was just informed by my source in Kabul that the injured female pup and sibling have been shipped to America. ***
