MAJOR
MALFUNCTION
by Timothy Rollins, Editor and Columnist

In
an online
article posted November 5th regarding the slaughter at the Soldier Readiness
Center at Fort Hood, Texas, I made the case for the honorable discharge of all
Muslims from the United States Armed Forces. Since then, I've caught hell for
making this statement along with suggesting the possible internment of Muslim-Americans
in camps like what was experienced by World War II Japanese-Americans.
Knowing this flak was coming - especially in light of a ten-minute television interview November 7th being reduced to little more than a sound bite - I knew a television newscast wasn't going to allow me sufficient opportunity to explain this in the detail it deserves, especially when only 12 minutes of the newscast deals with the news. While such an idea is indeed controversial, it must remain an option because, to date, the American Muslim Community - the one group with both the greatest power and best abilities to help stop this madness - has been either unable or unwilling to rise up en masse to those within their community who, by their violent actions, blaspheme the very faith they profess. It seems to me that they, more than most, are also scared themselves.
In the eight-plus years since 9/11, what all Americans - and especially American Muslims - need to remember is our collective responsibility as citizens to render the very best of our abilities, individually and collectively, in reducing the possibility of another 9/11-style attack. Simply denouncing acts of violence on the part of CAIR (Council on American-Islamic Relations) or local chapters of the Islamic Society is no longer enough. If there is any one body of Americans who can prevent the slaughter of their fellow citizens, it is Americans living within the nation's Islamic communities. Yet in the time since the attacks, said communities - periodic denunciations aside - have been overwhelmingly silent.
We've
since learned from news
reports that Major Hasan (right) was on the radar with at least one U.S.
intelligence agency. In addition, one of the Major's classmates indicated that
all the warning signs were there, and that instead of facing the problem directly,
the Army - in its perpetual pursuit of both political correctness and the avoidance
of litigation - not only swept it all under the rug, but also promoted Hasan
to the rank of Major last year, simply because of the shortage of warm bodies
with medical degrees.
During the Channel 9 interview, we discussed issues of internment in the original article. While I mentioned internment, I also said it remains by all means an absolute last option, and that it cannot be taken off the table. In historical perspective, there were matters regarding World War II Japanese-American internment that could have been handled much better. In her latest work, Michelle Malkin looks at the roundup of Japanese-Americans from that period, and was surprised when some of those who were encamped told her they were grateful they were protected from the climate of fear that wartime brings out in people. As I told a close friend yesterday, Tommy Lee Jones' character had it right in Men In Black when he said that individuals are smart, but that people ('the masses') are dumb and panicky. The fact remains - as I have said before - that while I am not the biggest advocate of these extreme measures, I do believe that this option must remain open, ready to go at a moment's notice, if for no other reason but the protection, safety and well-being of those within these groups who do live by the rules, and who cannot or should not be caught in the social and cultural crossfire.
And while there is a possibility of a major backlash against Muslims over this incident, I do believe that every reasonable effort must be made so as to avoid such. However - once again - the onus for making this happen HAS to come from the American Muslim community at large, which is by far in the greatest position to root out terrorism committed by those who claim to do such in the name of Allah.
Failing decisive action on the part of American Muslims, the likelihood of a roundup will increase, especially if more acts of violence are committed by those seeking a destiny with 72 virgins. And with one of Major Hasan's major concerns being unable to find a wife with whom he could live in a traditional Muslim marriage, it seems to show - now more than ever - that it really is all about sex, or more accurately, the lack thereof. ***
