Always Remember

It's almost been a year now since the cowardly terrorist attacks of September 11th. This was by far the most devastating attack on US soil in the history of America. It immediately sent America into a religious and patriotic outbreak not seen since the days of World War II. Flags went up in yards and on buildings all across America; everyone seemed to have a patriotic bumper sticker on his or her car, and people who hadn't been to church in years began attending again… all, in what seemed like an instant.
Now the bumper stickers are starting to wear and fade, after being placed there almost a year ago. Flags flying on the antennas of cars speeding down the highway are beginning to look worn and frayed. Life in America after September 11, 2001 seems to be getting back to normal again. But do we want life as we lived it before September 11th to be completely "normal" again? Do we want everything to go back to the way it was before that devastating September morning? I don't think so.
After September 11th,, there was a name being called upon by Americans that had largely been forgotten by many up until this time. That name was "God." The deadly attacks seemed to bring everyone and their brother to church the following Sunday morning. It was the only time that I can remember "standing room only" for a church service. You could even turn on the television and find both parties in Congress joining together to sing God Bless America on the steps of the U.S. Capitol.
What's happened since then? Is your Sunday morning church service still standing room only? Have you seen Congress singing God Bless America together lately? People seem to be forgetting what brought them there that painful September day.
Before 9/11, we didn't think we needed God anymore; we were doing just fine on our own. Yet, the minute we're in trouble, we expect Him to rush in like Superman and save us. You wonder how long God will keep coming to our rescue, as little as we seem to think of Him during the "good times." America has forgotten God for years; let's not continue to forget Him any longer. Will it take another national tragedy to bring us together again on a Sunday morning? Let's not wait for another catastrophe! Let's remember Him now, while we still can. There are some who -- after September 11, 2001 -- will never get that chance again. Let's not squander our chance now.
Take the time to look back at life a year ago. Remember the firefighters, the policemen, the paramedics, and the everyday citizens who risked their lives to save others. Remember the victims and their families as well. Men like 32-year-old Todd Beamer, who, while aboard the doomed Flight 93, in a last minute effort to thwart the terrorists evil plans, gave the call to the other passengers, "Let's roll," as they rushed the hijackers. This is genuine heroism. Even today we still have American soldiers oversees fighting an evil and gutless enemy. These soldiers, firefighters, policemen, paramedics and the Todd Beamer's of the world are America's heroes -- men and women who are willing to risk everything for their country. We owe these great Americans more than we can ever repay.
So as we are reminded of that fateful September day, let's remember to say a prayer for our country's leaders and the victim's families. Go out and replace that fading bumper sticker with a new one. Keep flying the flag proudly on your automobile. Don't cause us to look back in a few years and remember the days when America was patriotic. Let those days never end! Because in America, every day is Independence Day!
Always remember September 11, 2001 as the day that changed a nation. It turned the hearts of Americans back to God again (although somewhat briefly) and it brought us together as a stronger nation. As God tells us in Romans 8:28, "we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him…"
God Bless America - The greatest nation on earth! ***
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing. - Edmund Burke
