What do you mean by punch?

Above is the question this author is most often asked, when he tells people that TAP edits for punch. So what is it?

‘It’ is everything they didn’t teach you in English class. It’s using jokes that actually make people laugh. It’s playing with words. It’s stating things forcefully, without one ounce of resolve. It’s milking the written language for all it’s worth, shattering conventions in the process.

Punch is not a little bit like Kevin Costner’s description of hitting a golf ball just right in the movie Tin Cup. You feel a “pitchfork going off in your loins and want to hit it again.”
