Punch

Make me laugh

“What’s the difference between an orange?” asked Fozzie Bear. Some of the other Muppet Babies asked for the punchline. “That’s it,” he said, and this was his best material. The audience can no doubt sympathize with a befuddled Gonzo, who was beat up by Miss Piggy after proclaiming, “I don’t get it.”

Humor isn’t intellectually funny. It taps into something much more basic than our intelligence. It isn’t enough that something sounds funny, if it doesn’t make you laugh, it isn’t.

Dilbert© creator Scott Adams* suggests that humor is best created by combining two or more of the following six categories:

1) cuteness
2) meanness
3) bizarreness
4) recognizability
5) naughtiness
6) cleverness

*For further discussion of how to create humor, the author recommends Scott Adams’ The Joy of Work.
